Famous rapper detained over influencer's death
Controversial In relation to the Taiwanese influencer who was discovered dead in a hotel bathtub in Kuala Lumpur two weeks ago, Malaysian rapper Namewee has been placed under detention.
According to reliable sources Namewee, 42 and 31-year-old Iris Hsieh were last seen together. Her social media manager informed the BBC that she was in Malaysia to talk about a commercial video that Namewee had agreed to direct.
Namewee is back in prison to "assist in the investigation" after her death was reclassified as murder, according to police. He was granted bail on accusations of unlawful drug use and possession.
I can't escape
Over the past couple of hours, the case has taken numerous unexpected turns.
On October 22, Namewee found Hsieh unconscious in the restroom and called emergency services at 12:30 local time (05:30 GMT), according to Malaysian media sources.
Namewee was taken into custody by the police that same day after they discovered nine blue tablets in the hotel room that were thought to be ecstasy.
Who is Neomi?
With his songs, Namewee—real name Wee Meng Chee—has always courted controversy.
He first became well-known in 2007 for his contentious rendition of Malaysia's national anthem, Negaraku, which made fun of the government. He is frequently spotted sporting a beanie and sunglasses.
Authorities thought about charging him with sedition when the music video went viral on YouTube, but they decided against it after he apologized in public and deleted the video.
