Zahran Mamdani wins the mayoral election in New York City

In a race that united youthful voters and provoked discussion about the future course of the U.S. Democratic Party, Zahran Mamdani, 34, emerged victorious as the nominee for mayor of New York City.

Mamdani, a Democrat who originated in Uganda, defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was running as an independent, to become the youngest governor of the country's largest city in more than a century.

The self-described democratic socialist declared, "My companions, we have defeated a political dynasty," in a victory address.

Voters in California supported a proposal to rewrite the congressional electoral map ahead of next year's midterm elections, while Democrats also won governorships in Virginia and New Jersey.

Mamdani made affordability the focal point of his campaign, promising to increase social programs funded by additional taxes on corporations and wealthy earners.

Before his campaign got online traction a few months ago and helped him win the Democratic primary over summer, he was a relatively obscure member of the state assembly in New York.

now the city's first Muslim and South Asian leader. He mentioned a "new age" in his victory speech.
